donna,
don't get the medical establishment confused with the medical model. the tradational medical model assumes chronicity in people experiencing severe mental health problems, whilste the reocovery model redifines the problem to allow space for the mental diversity of people, ie; you might hear vioces but that does mean you can't recover from distress times and lead a fullfilling life. recovery is about getting rid of the 'them and us' of old. the medical establishments role in this is to provide a service that can assist people with thier distress in a way that is free from tradtional judgement and expectations of choricity.

here in the uk the medical establishment is definatly intrested in the recovery model as a way of working. right upto to governemtn policy level people are talking about recovery. however they just seem to be talking about it. lots of professionals sitting in rooms patting each other on the back and talking about how hip and right on they are now they have 30% of their work force with 'lived experience'. its a load of old bum really as what they don't seems to understand is that they are still defining people as 'them and us' by indentifying people as those with 'lived experience' and those with out!!

blagh blagh blagh... ranty rant... the problem is cultural. not just the work culture of the medical lot, but the culture of the western world.. you only have watch one the dodgey reality tv shows where somone goes to live with an amazonian tribe to realise how far human we have become. evolution has spent millions of years honing us into this slick and fantastic being that, due to a side effect of our fantastic frontal cortex, has lead us to live the bizzare lives we now do..... spiritualty has been massive for humans for thousands and thousands of years. its quite possible that spirituality was sexually selected for, i.e. spirituality was very important to humans so girls chose men who displayed higher spritual abilitys (and yes most of the choosing is done by women not men). its only in the last couple of hundred years that people who have the ability to hear voices, have visions ect have been labeled as lunatics/insane/mad/schizophrenic, and then removed from society via bins/asylums/hostpitals/medication/labotomies. why??? fear probably? fear from our leading regions maybe? also we had a revolution of logic and science where people would display their ego's by their application of logic. dreamy, spiritual, mad people are impossible to understand by logic. so authoriies, rather than back, admit their lack of understanding and leave people in peace, would flex their muscles, claim to understand and then treat people in a way that is inline wirth the claimed understanding...

you just have to look at a study by the world health authority from a few years back; somthing like 33% of people mack a full recovery from majot psychotic illness in the west another 33% are sustained on meds and the last 3rd meet untimely ends... very bad.... whilste in parts of africa with no mental health provision, 80% make a full recovery (recover from distress and continue to lead a meanfull role in the community) and i'm not sure about the 20%.....

blagh blagh.. sorry about that, got abit carried away :)

As a peer support worker and former self harmer, from Scotland, I found it very encouraging to read the posts above. I thought they were very thorough and open-minded and I'm looking foward to watching the video of ex-cutter as, I'm sure it will be equally encouraging.
Thanks

Thank you for your comment, Raymond! How many people attend your CPS monthly meetings? I attend a CPS professional development group once a month, also, and it's definitely helpful.

My name is Raymond, I am a CPS , I was certified and trained via the Institute last year, I currently work as a CPS at Horizon House Inc. The program was orginally a partial program and is part of the city-wide transformation project to become more recovery oriented. I am a memebr of a alumi group of CPS graduates in the city who meet once a month, i have hopes our group becomes more grounded in provideding training and education opportunites along with being supportive too and wanted to tell you to keep up the good work with your blog.
