In Pennsylvania, peer support services can be billed to Medicaid. So if a peer you are working with has MA (Medical Assistance), the agency you work for can bill MA and get reimbursed for it.
Of course, in order to bill MA, you and your agency must adhere to certain guidelines. (And yes, a lot of us are frustrated by these guidelines… trying to be recovery-oriented on a medical model can be difficult. So if you’re frustrated by this, you’re not alone!)
The MA bulletins linked here explain the regulations around billing for peer support services. If you’re a peer specialist in Pennsylvania, or if you are considering become a peer specialist in PA, and have not read these bulletins, I’d strongly urge you to do so. You should know what’s going to be expected of you if you go to work for an agency that bills MA for peer services.
