Alcoholics Anonymous. Official website for the 12-step/peer support program for alcoholics. Local chapters and meetings around the country.

Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law. Legal advocacy center for people with mental disabilities. Website contains information on important mental health legislation.

Boston University Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation. The BU Psych Rehab is staffed by some of the leading experts on recovery, including William Anthony, Judi Chamberlin, and Courtenay Harding. The BU Psych Rehab website offers articles, studies, and other resources for best-practice ideas to achieve a recovery-oriented mental health system.

Consumer/Survivor Mental Health Information. Website from the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services/SAMHSA.

CrazyMeds.Org. Website written by mental health consumers containing real-life, practical advice on everything from medication side-effects to applying for Social Security Disability Income.

DBT Self Help. A website that explains DBT (dialectic behavior therapy) and offers insight on some DBT skills–from the perspective of someone who’s gone through DBT.Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance. Website contains information and worksheets to help people better understand their mental illness and take back control of their lives.

Emotions Anonymous. A 12-step/peer support group for people with a mental illness. Local chapters and meetings across the country, plus online and phone meetings.

Gift From Within. Nonprofit organization dedicated to survivors of trauma.

Mental Health America. Dedicated to helping all people live mentally healthier lives.

Narcotics Anonymous. Official website for the peer support program for drug addicts. Grew out of Alcoholics Anonymous. Local chapters and meetings around the country.

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Education, advocacy, and support organization for people with mental illness and their family members.

National Empowerment Center. Organization dedicated to consumer empowerment, started by Daniel Fisher, M.D., PhD, who was himself diagnosed with schizophrenia. Website contains many useful articles on recovery and coping skills.

National Mental Health Consumers’ Self-Help Clearinghouse. An organization that provides technical support (training materials, contact information, resources) for consumers working to improve the mental health system.
